Lesson plan
Concept /Topic To Teach: How to keep animals and the environment safe and healthy
Standards Addressed: Each individual kid has the ability to make a difference in helping out the environment.
General Goal(s):Teach kids what they can do to keep wild animals safe, students will be able to demonstrate how to keep the environment clean.
Specific Objectives: Keep the environment clean, teach every day tricks to keep the world clean.
Required Materials: List of tricks.
Copy for each student.
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): I plan to bring in my audience by using pathos. Everyone loves animals, so I will show them a video of a clip of polar bears and how loveable they are, and then show a video clip of how they are quickly becoming extinct if there is not something done.
Step-By-Step Procedures: I plan to talk about the dangers animals are facing (ex: polar bears and dolphins). Then I will discuss the importance of their individual help in changing the world. EVERYONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I will then show them small tricks that the kids can do each day that will help the issues. (show them the list and discuss)
Plan For Independent Practice:Each kid will get a copy of the list and circle FIVE things that they believe they can do each day in their normal routine. After the kids have circled five tricks on their paper, they will get up and share their ideas with the class. This will motivate other kids in the class to do the same.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Remind how every person can make a difference to save innocent animals.
Assessment Based On Objectives: I would give each individual credit for completing the activity.
Adaptations (For Students With Learning Disabilities): I would go through all their options with them, and discuss why they could take part in the change. They will only have to choose THREE activities. When it comes time to share with the class, I will walk them step by step so that they can learn to speak in front of the class alone.
Extensions (For Gifted Students): I challenge the gifted students to come up with their own alternatives they could do to help out. I would ask them to make a list of three things that they can come up with on their own.
Possible Connections To Other Subjects: This activity deals with global warming, science, social studies, and environmental awareness.

Timed Writing
In my own personal journey through creating Project Three, I have not yet completed the three major steps. My call to adventure begun when I was introduced to the task ahead of me: preparing a lesson plan for fifth graders. My personal road of trials consisted of me finding a topic, and then finding a way to teach it through one lesson appropriate for my audience. This road of trials was challenging because it made me think of all the possibilities I could take to complete my task/journey. However, I came to my final consensus, where I decided my topic and the way of which I could express the topic in an appropriate way. My apotheosis will come when the project is fully completed and I receive my final grade because it is until then that I will appreciate the efforts I put forth while completing my mission.

Animal Welfare Institute
To whom this may concern,
Hello my name is Julia. I am a former college student in Florida looking to work with dolphins for a future career. I have a deep passion for not just dolphins, but all animals. I believe they are beautiful and interesting. What insults me more than anything is the mistreatment of innocent animals. More specifically, I am deeply concerned with the dolphin abuse that is currently happening in Japan. The dolphin slaughters that are allowed there are horrific and wrong, and i believe your organization would completely agree with me that the law needs to be stopped.
I am aware that your organization, among others, takes a big part in the fight against the dolphin slaughter in Japan. This makes me very thankful, and appreciative towards origination's such as your own. Your campaigns, petitions, and effort in this fight are very helpful in an attempt to end this disastrous law. I would just like to honor your efforts and motives as an organization. With an organization like yours with a single goal to "reduce the sum total of pain and fear inflicted on animals by humans," it is completely inspiring. It is very relieving, coming from an animal fanatic, that there are people like you working towards their safety. I would love to hear back from you, in reply to this letter.
Sincerely,
Julia Viscome

Environment Investigation Agency
To whom it may concern,
Hello, my name is Julia. I am currently a college student in Florida working to become a Dolphin Trainer. I have taken an interest in not just dolphins, but marine life, ever sense I can remember. I believe marine life are the most interesting and beautiful creatures on the planet. I believe that because of this interest, that you and I are very compatible. I admire your organization and work they put forth to keep not only marine life, but all living things healthy, clean and safe. However, what really impresses me is your participation in the fight against dolphin slaughter in Japan.
From your studies, I have learned how horrific the Japanese law allowing dolphin slaughter is. Your research has not only proved how barbaric and destructive the law is, but how inhuman the Japanese government is being. This law must be stopped. However, your list of things people can do to help (listed online) is very helpful. Your online campaign is very helpful as well. Your organization has successfully promoted public awareness around the world. I believe your organization helps in making a difference in changing this law. Just knowing the difference organizations such as yours are making when taking a stand against the Japanese government is very relieving. I would love to hear back from your organization to continue to stay active in this fight.
Sincerely,
Julia Viscome

The Ocean Project
To whom it may concern,
Hello, my name is Julia and I come from a place where the marine environment is very important. I am excited to talk to you because I am very inspired with the impact your project provides while improving the ocean environment. My college campus is surrounded by the ocean, and my daily life revolves around the simple pleasures the ocean brings. I also take a great deal of pleasure in observing marine life. My future goal is to work with marine animals, more specifically, dolphins; Which brings up the meaning of this letter.
I am aware that your organization has quite the effect on the dolphin slaughter that is happening in Japan. This tragedy deeply distresses me, with enormous sympathy for the dolphins, porpoises and whales that are being shamelessly killed. Those shamelous slaughters have a strong impact on not only my future, but the future population of marine life. I am strongly apposed to the Japanese law, along with you, allowing more than 22,000 of these animals killed each year. However, I was very relieved to see the involvement your project has in an attempt to end this law. Such efforts as the dolphin petition, the ACT for Dolphins, your involvement in the International Day of Protest against the Japanese Embassy, and much more projects, have truly inspired not only me, but thousands of people around the world to put forth an effort. Your organization has brought forth public awareness to the issue, which is half the battle. I am truly inspired by your motives, and wish you encouragement in continuing to fight against the barbaric slaughters still being continued today in Japan.
I would love to hear a reply from you, concerning this issue.
sincerely,
Julia Viscome

Dolphin Slaughter in Japan
One of the most exhilarating experiences a person can encounter is the rush that comes along with being able to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. Exhibits such as aquariums and zoos, scuba diving trips, safari rides, and whale watches, allow a closer look into the remarkable life of wildlife. However, due to one unfortunate fishing law in Japan, these opportunities to observe wildlife are rapidly becoming limited. A current law, supported by the Japanese government, shamefully allows over 22,000 dolphins, porpoises, and small whales each year to be legally slaughtered by fisherman in a selfish attempt to benefit the Japanese economy. This law is deliberately damaging the marine wildlife and motivating activists, petitioners, marine biologists, organizations such as the ocean project, and anyone with a personal interest in the matter to put an end to this sadistic law.
This harmful law that legalizes barbaric dolphin slaughter is more destructive and harmful than most people know. The number of actual animals legally killed in effect to the law is deplorable. According to the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), more than a shocking 400,000 dolphins, porpoises, and small whales have been killed in the past twenty years. The killings known as dolphin hunts appear to be not only inhuman, but barbaric. An activist described the hunts by saying "They are driven onto Japanese beaches and bays, stabbed with spears and knives, then left to slowly bleed to death literally turning the sea red while others drown entangled in nets. Some of the dolphins are taken alive, pulled out of the water by ropes tied around their tails to be sold to marine parks." If the public were aware of these sickening events, an outrage would be guaranteed.
These heart-breaking murders have a vast impact on the dolphins, rapidly jeopardizing their population. More specifically, Striped dolphins have extremely suffered from the slaughtering resulting in a highly endangered status. Their condition is so severe in fact, that in 1992 the Scientific Committee recommended that the Government of Japan implement an “interim halt in all direct catches of striped dolphins.” Nonetheless, the Japanese government failed to initiate, leading to an annual quota of 725 Sriped dolphins killed till this day. Unfortunately, Striped dolphins are just one of eight studied species that are headed down the distressing path of extinction. Whether the government recognizes the extent of their lethal actions or not, it is time that something is done.
This uncontrollable law may possibly have more harsh effects than the Japanese government intended; or that is what they want people to believe. When combining all the information together, suggestions lead one to believe that the government chooses to ignore these unbelievable effects with the success of the economy in mind. By neglecting to regulate the law requested by all the protesters, activists, and organizations, the government created an unpopular and disliked persona around the world. As a cheap attempt to fool the citizens, the government ordered the dolphin and porpoise products to be mislabeled as “whale” in order to deceive the consumers and further the economy. To make matters worse, according to the Animal Welfare Institute, these mislabeled products are sold despite the sky-high levels of mercury, heavy metals, DDT, and PCB's in the meat. In fact, most tested dolphin meat, conducted by the Animal Welfare Institute, has a toxic load of 10 to 500 times the recommended maximum intake level for human consumption. "The public, including the people of Japan, would be outraged if they knew the truth,” expressed one of many passionate activists.
Another form of evidence revealing the government’s undercover knowledge is apparent in countless video footage tapes capturing the slaughters. In a heroic story of activists who jeopardized their safety in order to make these evil acts public through live footage, they were shocked at the amount of control the government held over the issue. In the shocking article, provided by the Animal Welfare Institute, the activists found themselves in a dangerous position as their lives (and video tape) were threatened by the fishermen who caught them filming the dolphin slaughter. In attempt to protect themselves from the angered fishermen, the frightened activists called on the police. However, instead of the fishermen being taken away, it was in fact the activists who were in violation. This is clear evidence of the obscured amount of control the government contains. The government deviously orders the fishermen to continue on their hunts, the police men to continue enforcing the law, and the manufactures to continue mislabeling the products, while disregarding all damaging effects, with nothing but selfish rewards in mind. Unfortunately, the result of this battle rests in the Japanese government, and will stay there.
Luckily, people are coming from all around the world to join in the fight in ending this animal cruelty. A courageous organization known as The Ocean Project put together a petition aimed towards the government of Japan, the prime minister, and Mr. Shinzo Abe, urging to end the dolphin slaughter in Japan. This petition currently has 121,783 signatures, working towards a high-set goal of 250,000 signatures. In another attempt to resist the law, on October 7th, 2005, activists including members of In Defense of Animals, the International Marine Mammal Project of Earth Island Institute and One voice-France met in San Francisco to protest. Standing directly in front of the Japanese Consulate, these protestors drew attention to the annual killings held in Japan. This petition did not just occur in California, but in front of forty-four different Japanese embassies within 26 countries. In determination to get through to the Japanese government, the EIA has encouraged all Japanese citizens to boycott all fisherman products to create an impact on the economy. As if that was not enough, there is also an Act for Dolphins being led by scientists seeking to raise awareness ideally resulting in an uproar. However, even after all raised awareness, protests, and petitions, the final decision ultimately relies in the hands of the Japanese Government.
Hopefully, the end of this vicious and sadistic war is in sight. For now, the only thing the public can do is keep persistent in the fight against the law. Organizations and activists cannot stress enough the importance of this struggle. With support from around the world, the motivation to save the dolphins remains strong.
